A desert safari is the quintessential Dubai experience. Within 45 minutes of the city's glittering skyline, you're surrounded by rolling golden dunes, silence, and a sky that seems impossibly vast. But with dozens of operators offering everything from budget bus tours to private luxury camps, choosing the right safari can feel overwhelming.
After a decade of organising desert experiences for thousands of travellers, here's our honest guide to getting it right.
Types of Desert Safaris
Evening Safari — The classic choice. Pickup around 2:30 PM, dune bashing, camp activities, BBQ dinner, and live entertainment. You'll be back at your hotel by 9:30 PM. This is what 80% of visitors book, and for good reason.
Morning Safari — Ideal for those who want the desert without the late night. Sunrise over the dunes is spectacular, temperatures are cooler, and you'll be back by noon with the rest of the day free.
Overnight Safari — For the adventurous. Sleep in a traditional or luxury tent, enjoy a quieter camp experience, and wake up for sunrise photography. Not for light sleepers — desert nights can be breezy.
The desert doesn't rush. The best safaris give you time to sit on a dune, watch the sun sink, and feel the sand cool beneath your feet.
What to Expect: The Timeline
A typical evening safari follows this flow: hotel pickup → 45-minute drive to the desert → tyre deflation and dune bashing (30–45 min) → sunset photo stop → arrival at camp → camel ride, sandboarding, henna → dinner buffet → live shows → return to hotel.
Dune bashing is thrilling but intense — think roller coaster on sand. If you have back problems, are pregnant, or get motion sick easily, let your operator know. They can arrange a gentler route or skip it entirely.
What to Wear & Bring
Comfortable, loose clothing and closed-toe shoes. Avoid sandals — sand gets everywhere. Bring sunglasses and sunscreen for the afternoon portion. Even in summer, desert evenings cool down significantly, so a light jacket or shawl is wise from October through March.
How to Choose an Operator
Look for DTCM-licensed operators with insured 4x4 vehicles. Read recent reviews specifically mentioning pickup punctuality and camp cleanliness. Be wary of prices that seem too low — they often mean overcrowded camps, poor food, and rushed experiences.
At Narendra Tourism, we partner with three desert camps rated 4.5+ stars, offer transparent pricing from AED 149, and include free cancellation up to 24 hours before pickup.
